Continuous hybrid cooling using geothermal and solar heat sources and underground storage systems (Auftrag Oman)

Forschungsprojekt

The research programme aims to develop a worldwide unique concept for a continuously operating cooling system based on renewable energy resources. One cornerstone will be the supply or storage of heat or cold from the Earth subsurface. A demonstrator of such an innovative system should be realised in the project. Capacity development will be established by including Postgraduate students within the procedure. The whole development chain from reservoir identification to the technical use should be covered by the project. The state of the art will be expanded and new ideas and know-how will be directly disseminated to Oman. Moreover, specific institute buildings, like the new IATI/TRCBuilding will get a demonstrator of continuous hybrid cooling. In a further step and if all tests will be successful, the planned Innovation Park in Muscat, or comparable sites, will include use of geothermal and solar heat sources and underground storage systems to supply chilled water for air-conditioning. The realisation would present a great market entrance of an environmentally friendly and sustainable energy option especially for countries within the Arabian Peninsula.
