Rural Agriculture and Poverty Trap: Can Climate-Smart Innovations provide break-even solutions to Smallholder Farmers? (RAPTrap)

Forschungsprojekt

There is plethora of evidence suggesting that the majority of smallholder farmers in rural areas of sub-Saharan African countries are poverty-trapped and extremely vulnerable to climate change. The research aims at contributing to the advancement of our understanding on the reasons for the limited success of climate-smart agriculture as a tool to avert the negative consequences of deteriorating climatic conditions.

The research, utilises a mixed methods approach to address the following questions:
* 1. What is the level of awareness of climate change among smallholder farmers in the two rural areas in Ghana?
* 1.1 What are the perceptions of smallholder farmers on climate change in the two rural areas in Ghana?
* 1.2 How affected are smallholder farmers by climate change in the areas?
* 2. Can climate-smart agriculture ensure food security and increased income for smallholder farmers in the two rural areas in Ghana?
* 2.1 To what extent are climate-smart agricultural practices adopted by smallholder farmers in the two rural areas in Ghana?
* 2.2 What are the determinants of adoption of climate-smart agricultural innovations by smallholder farmers in the two rural areas in Ghana?
* 2.3 What is the relationship between the farmers’ perception of climate change and adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices in these areas?
* 2.4 What is the difference with respect to food security and income between adopter and non-adopter of climate-smart agricultural innovations in the two rural areas in Ghana?
* 3. What are the major constraints to adoption of climate-smart innovations peculiar to the different areas?
