Higher education entrance qualification
There are various ways to obtain a higher education entrance qualification (HEEQ). An overview of the most important ones follows below:
Table of contents
Eligible School Qualifications
You can apply to HTW Berlin with a general higher education entrance qualification (e.g. German Abitur, A-levels, high school diploma), a subject-specific higher education entrance qualification, or a Universities of Applied Sciences entrance qualification (Fachhochschulreife – FHR).
Composite entrance qualification for Universities of Applied Sciences
In the event that your certificates do not constitute the explicit equivalent of an entrance qualification for Universities of Applied Sciences (FHR) or only cover the academic section of the same, you can still be eligible to study in Berlin in the event that you have also completed internships, vocational training or voluntary service, as you can have all of these certificates recognised together in order to apply for a degree programme.
Apply for recognition
You can apply to the Berlin Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family for a certificate of recognition of your status as holder of an entrance qualification for Universities of Applied Sciences (FHR).
Documents required for the application
- Complete certificate pertaining to the academic section of the FHR
- Proof of the practical section of the FHR (e.g. internship, vocational training, voluntary service)
- Certificate of recognition of these certificates as entrance qualifications for Universities of Applied Sciences
- If applicable, further evidence specified in the certificate of recognition (e.g. leaving certificate)
Completion date
The date of completion of the final section of the FHR is decisive for your admission.
University admission for vocationally qualified persons (studies without secondary school leaving examination)
It is also possible to study at HTW Berlin without a secondary school leaving examination. The prerequisite for this constitutes at least two years of successfully completed vocational training.
Documents required for the application
- Certificate of completion of vocational training (e.g. certificate from the International Chamber of Commerce (German: IHK); the vocational school certificate alone is not sufficient) for the subject-specific higher education entrance qualification
or
- Certificate of completion of a master craftsman, technician or comparable advanced training qualification for the general higher education entrance qualification
You will be informed whether further proof is required within the application deadline after completing the online application.
Application, selection procedure and admission
- Applications must be submitted online via the HTW Berlin application portal.
- As a rule, 10% of the study places per degree programme are available for vocationally qualified students.
- In the case of admission with a subject-specific higher education entrance qualification, certain conditions may be imposed.
