Change of degree programme or university

  • A change of degree programme or university is possible if you are or have already been enrolled at a German university.
  • Applications must be submitted online within the regular deadlines.
  • If you transfer, your previous academic achievements will be checked and, if necessary, credited to the new degree programme. You must submit the relevant proof of study.
  • Placement in a higher semester depends on the recognition of your previous achievements. In degree programmes of the same name, the semesters are counted, in related degree programmes the credit points earned are decisive.

Change of university (from another university to HTW Berlin)

  • You can apply either via the HTW Berlin application portal or via uni-assist.
  • In addition to the regular documents (e.g. German Abitur (secondary school leaving examination) certificate), proof of all previous periods of study in Germany must be submitted, even if no credits have been earned.
  • Academic achievements from overseas universities can be recognised. To this end, an application including documents must be submitted by 15 October (winter semester) or 15 April (summer semester).
  • A certified translation is required for documents in languages other than German or English.
  • Overseas students must report a change of residence to the relevant Immigration Authority and, if necessary, apply for a new residence permit.

Change of degree programme (within HTW Berlin)

  • The application is made via the HTW Berlin application portal.
  • Additional documents (e.g. proof of language proficiency) may be required.
  • Any achievements and examination attempts that have already been passed or failed will be recognised.
  • The programme counselling service provides information on the recognition of credits and placement in the semester of study.
  • It is advantageous in the event that credit points have already been earned in the chosen degree programme, especially when changing within a faculty.

Recognition of academic achievements

  • The following achievements are eligible for recognition: Those that have been completed at a state-recognised higher education institution and do not differ significantly in terms of quality, level, learning outcomes, scope and profile.
  • The following achievements are not eligible for recognition: Those that are part of the higher education entrance qualification, individual units (only complete modules are recognised) and achievements that are not deemed equivalent.
  • Every study or examination achievement and every examination attempt will be recognised – even for non-subject-related degree programmes.
  • Recognition can only be waived for ungraded performance records (otherwise the subject would be graded 4.0).

Application for a higher semester

  • Applying for a higher semester can increase your chances of admission, as there are often more free places available.
  • You can find out which degree programmes allow you to apply for a higher semester in the HTW Berlin online application. You can only apply if higher semesters are available for the respective degree programmes.
  • Results of examinations not yet completed at the time of application must be submitted later.
