Second degree

You meet the criteria for a second degree in the event that you have already successfully completed an equivalent university degree (e.g. Bachelor’s degree) in another degree programme at a university in Germany or in an EU/EEA country. A separate advance quota exists for second degree applications (3%).

Exclusion criteria for a second degree

An application for a second degree is not considered in the event that

  • your first degree programme was completed outside the EU or the EEA,
  • you are aiming for a higher academic degree (e.g. Master’s degree) than the one you have already obtained (e.g. Bachelor’s degree),
  • you have studied but have not obtained an academic degree or your degree certificate is not available by the application deadline.

Application for a second degree

You apply in the same way as for a first degree:

You can find out which documents you need to submit in the application portal. Please apply in good time. You may still need to request supporting documents.

Recognition of academic achievements and semester placement

  • Your application will be checked to determine the extent to which your previous academic achievements will be recognised and in which semester you will be placed.
  • For admission to the first semester, the average grade of the first degree and a letter of motivation for the second degree are prerequisites.
  • Admission to a higher semester is only possible if places are available.
  • For further information on the recognition process, please contact the programme counselling service of your chosen degree programme.
