Numerus clausus (NC) - what does this mean?

The NC of a degree programme indicates the minimum grade from either the Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education or the Advanced Level Certificate of Education (German: (Fach-)Abitur) which was required in the previous semesters in order to obtain a study place. It is not a fixed value, but a relative benchmark that changes every semester depending on supply and demand.

How is the NC determined?

The NC of a degree programme depends on how many

  • study places are available,
  • applications are received, and on how many
  • admitted applicants actually accept the places.

Applying is always worth it!

The NC constitutes an overview of the selection procedures of previous years, and does not provide reliable information about your chances of admission. For this reason, HTW Berlin does not publish NC values.

It’s always worth applying! It is important that you assign the highest priority (priority 1) to your chosen degree programme when applying via the Hochschulstart platform.

Allocation procedure for Bachelor’s degree programmes

Study places are generally allocated as follows:

  • 20% according to the Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education or the Advanced Level Certificate of Education (German: (Fach-)Abitur grade
  • 20% after the waiting period (number of semesters since acquiring the higher education entrance qualification minus semesters already studied)
  • 60% according to the university’s own selection procedure: 50% Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education or the Advanced Level Certificate of Education (German: (Fach-)Abitur grade, 50% vocational training

Exceptions

  • Economics and Politics: voluntary academic assessment test counts
  • Business Communication Management: 50% secondary school leaving examination grade, 50% waiting time
  • International Media Informatics: advanced courses in maths, computer science and/or physics are included; deviating advance quotas
  • Design degree programmes: aptitude test required

Allocation procedure for Master’s degree programmes

As a rule, places on Master’s degree programmes are allocated as follows:

  • 80% according to the university’s own selection criteria (e.g. grade of first degree, professional experience)
  • 20% after waiting period (from point of acquisition of first degree)

The exact criteria can be found in the respective admission regulations of the degree programmes.

Advance quotas

A certain percentage of study places is reserved for certain applicant groups:

  • 10% for vocationally qualified students without a general higher education entrance qualification
  • 5% for applicants from non-EU countries and stateless persons (up to 12% for degree programmes taught in English)
  • 5% for minors residing with a custodian in Berlin or Brandenburg
  • 3% for a second degree
  • 2% for hardship cases
