Distraction of pedestrians through reading and texting on cell phones

Auftrags-, Kooperative Forschung

Using an eye tracker,
differences in visual attention between distracted female and male pedestrians
in Sofia and Berlin are analyzed. The findings are relevant for pedestrian safety on
sidewalks.

In a field study, 32 participants
in Berlin and 30 in Sofia are distracted by smartphone messages while walking a
route in both directions. Fixation behavior toward the environment and the
smartphone is examined using the metrics Average Fixation Duration, Fixation
Count, Total Fixation Duration, and Time to First Fixation. Specific target
objects are placed along the route to support the analysis. In addition,
unpredictable pedestrians and distinctive elements within the scenarios are
taken into account.

The aim of this study is to
identify differences between female and male participants in Sofia and Berlin.
Based on these findings, existing deficits are identified and potential
improvements are derived.
