Leave of absence
Table of contents
Possible reasons for a leave of absence
- Illness
- Voluntary service
- Pregnancy, maternity leave or parental leave
- Caring for close relatives
Time and duration
- Possible from the second semester at the earliest; for degree programmes in which students only enrol once a year, from the third semester onwards
- Leave of absence is always valid for a whole semester.
- A maximum of two consecutive sabbatical semesters exists (more in exceptional cases); exception: parental leave of up to six semesters possible
- Once you have registered for an examination, you may no longer take a leave of absence.
- As the semester fee is generally reduced in the case of a leave of absence, it is advisable to submit the application before paying the semester fee.
Important information
- During a sabbatical semester, no courses may be attended, no examinations may be registered for and no coursework may be completed.
- Compulsory internships or internships abroad are not recognised!
- A sabbatical semester on leave counts as a university semester, not as a subject-related semester.
- Please note: Educational support allowance (BAföG), child benefit and part-time jobs may be affected — make sure you find out in advance!
Application
- Download the application form from the LSF campus management portal.
- Send the application form and proof (e.g. medical certificate, certificates, written justification) by email from your HTW Berlin account to the Student Service Centre by the specified deadline.
- Don't forget your re-registration! The leave of absence only becomes valid upon timely re-registration.
