Fabrication of Hydrogen Sensor for the hydrogen gas leak detector.

Hydrogen is expected as a next-generation clean energy to replace a fossil energy. To expand the use of hydrogen energy in daily life, its safety must be ensured and the technology for using hydrogen safely demands the most attention especially during transport and storage. Hydrogen gas spread to air very quickly and the concentration of hydrogen is decreased rapidly. However, a hydrogen charging station may explode if a leak occurs. Therefore, although the leaking of hydrogen from the fuel storage of HFCVs is not problematic, this gas is still dangerous and must be handled with care in large storage and refill stations. It is therefore very important to develop a highly sensitive hydrogen detection sensor to ensure safety from hydrogen leaks because this gas has no colour, taste, or smell. Furthermore, some of the large storages are planned underwater and the immediate leakage may not be obvious at early stages.
Our project will draw expertise at Robert Gordon University in hydrogen storage vessels using composite materials and University of Applied Sciences Berlin expertise in Microsystems Technologies and Microsensors (FB I)) under the leadership of Prof Njuguna and Prof. Ngo respectively.
