Dangers and Dwellers: an Earth sciences game for teachers and students to promote civic engagement and climate action (Da&Dw - EarthVism)
The project Earthvism builds on an existing board game named Dangers & Dwellers (Da&Dw), which has been designed and playtested by the project leaded (University of Firenze, Italy) for more than a year in the framework of past projects. Earthvism aims to: - digitalize the game - spread its use across international borders - play it in (mainly) high-schools - carry out research on the game’s impact Da&Dw is a semi-collaborative game about the sustainable management of geological hazards (earthquakes, landslides, floods). It is built to let the players experience how complex, multifaceted, and interconnected are the causes leading to natural disasters. This complexity is very hard to explain, teach and learn with traditional approaches. However, as we have already measured during pilot sessions, a game experience could do the job very effectively. Moreover, Da&Dw players discover that there is not A solution to the problem. Rather, to build resilience, complex and well-designed sets of multi-sectorial actions need to be implemented, requiring a mix of scientific knowledge, balance of socio-economic interests, and civic engagement. This is very difficult to obtain, but not impossible in a mature democratic society.
