Improving environmental and social standards for farmers in Ecuador: A case study on the impacts of the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (SCDDA) (IESSF)

Forschungsprojekt

Since the SCDDA has only been implemented for a short time, there is still little information on whether first positive successes have already been observed through the introduction of the SCDDA. This is where this research project comes in and investigates whether small farmers in Ecuador observe positive effects and whether supermarket chains in Germany (which are the main buyers of agricultural products) really meet the requirements of the SCDDA. The specific focus of the research will be on cocoa and banana as the main agricultural exports from Ecuador to Germany.
To accomplish the objective, to which extend the SCCDA is effective around one year after coming into force, a case study of smallholder farmers in Ecuador with interviews will be conducted.
The results of this research will contribute to an improvement in food security for farmers in Ecuador as the goals of the SCDDA are directly as well as indirectly linked to better access to food. Furthermore, the results can contribute to the design of the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) that is currently in negotiation as well as other national and international legislations.
